Christmas in the Nursery

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” in the nursery. We have been making Christmas decorations and hanging them on the Christmas tree. Some of the children have been working in our Santa’s workshop and helping Santa by making Christmas presents. We have been writing letters to Santa and posting them in the post box. We have been making Christmas trees and Christmas stockings and there have been sparkles everywhere! We have been estimating lengths of paper and decorating our own Christmas wrapping paper and wrapping up presents that can be found under our Christmas tree.

We have been listening to lots of stories and have been dressing up and making up our own stories too. We have been practising our Christmas songs and will be singing them for the parents next week. We are looking forward to our Christmas parties on Thursday 19th and we hope a special visitor might be able to come and join us.

We wish everyone a happy Christmas, from all of us in the nursery.

This September we have been talking and learning about the weather. We learned that the weather can be measured. We put a rain gauge made out of a plastic bottle in the nursery garden and in one day we collected 3cm of rain!  We have been recording the weather on a weather chart made by Kornelia. Some of the children made kites to fly on the windy days we have been having. Miss McGregor made a cloud in the nursery with shaving foam and dripped coloured water through the cloud to show what happens when the rain is heavy with water droplets. Lots of the children had a go at making their own clouds and dripping the rain on to the shaving foam cloud and observing what happens. We have had a lot of fun learning about the weather.

Nursery Garden

This new session we have already been busy in the garden picking all the fruit and vegetables that have grown over the Summer. We have been picking runner beans, tomatoes and apples. We have been digging up carrots and onions. Mrs McCracken cooked our vegetables and made a tasty ratatouille for snack time. We will be using the apples to make delicious apple crumble and maybe some muffins.

Nursery lunch taster session success

This morning twenty-two of our nursery pupils enjoyed a chance to have a school lunch in the St John’s dinner hall with their parents and carers. We were delighted to see so many of next year’s pupils enjoy their freshly prepared food. We began with a short input by Jan and Susan from Childsmile, the ladies had a lovely display for children and families to look at and lots of stickers to hand out too!

Chris Ross, head of catering services for Edinburgh was able to join us and he spoke about the meal provision and menus on offer for children. Then it was time to try the food and ask questions.

A big thank you to the school catering team led by Helen for their efforts today, as well as the ladies from Childsmile, all the parents and carers who took time to come along and try a school meal and of course Chris as head of catering services.

Welcome to our new Primary 1 children!

This morning, some of our new Primary 1s came along with their parents and carers to meet their new teachers and to get used to the learning spaces.

After a wee story and a chat with their new teachers, Primary 6 did an excellent job as our new buddies, taking the children along to their classrooms and helping them to explore the different areas. Here are a few photographs of the morning. Well done to all our new Primary 1s!
