Mischievous Badger the Mystical Mutt visits St John’s

St John’s welcomed Badger and his creators Lyn McNichol and Laura Cameron Jackson on Tuesday 19th November for an energetic and creative Scottish Book Week assembly.

Badger the Mystical Mutt was shortlisted as a regional finalist at this year’s British Book Award and Laura read extracts from the series to the Primary 1 – 4 classes who attended the assembly.

Badger himself made an appearance which the children enjoyed very much, St John’s would like to thank Badger, Laura and Lyn for visiting us yesterday and a big thank you to the Parent Council who paid for the visit as part of our Book Week activities.

Nursery lunch taster session success

This morning twenty-two of our nursery pupils enjoyed a chance to have a school lunch in the St John’s dinner hall with their parents and carers. We were delighted to see so many of next year’s pupils enjoy their freshly prepared food. We began with a short input by Jan and Susan from Childsmile, the ladies had a lovely display for children and families to look at and lots of stickers to hand out too!

Chris Ross, head of catering services for Edinburgh was able to join us and he spoke about the meal provision and menus on offer for children. Then it was time to try the food and ask questions.

A big thank you to the school catering team led by Helen for their efforts today, as well as the ladies from Childsmile, all the parents and carers who took time to come along and try a school meal and of course Chris as head of catering services.

Welcome to our new Primary 1 children!

This morning, some of our new Primary 1s came along with their parents and carers to meet their new teachers and to get used to the learning spaces.

After a wee story and a chat with their new teachers, Primary 6 did an excellent job as our new buddies, taking the children along to their classrooms and helping them to explore the different areas. Here are a few photographs of the morning. Well done to all our new Primary 1s!

Flexible Learning Spaces in P1

Primary 1 staff have been trying out new combinations of furniture and resources. The children have really been enjoying moving around the new layout and using the resources in a variety of ways.

In the STEM space, we were building models with the lego and exploring with the magnets. In the Literacy area, the children were word building and practising their fine motor skills with paintbrushes. Outside in the breakout space, lots of fabulous models were being created and stories were being shared in the library.

Planting Seeds in Primary 1

Primary 1 have been collecting old plastic drinks bottles. We are now recycling them and making them into little greenhouses! We started putting the soil and water in today and soon we will be ready to choose what seeds we want to plant.

We know that our seeds need soil, water and light to grow – following on from our S.W.A.F. learning at the Botanic Gardens last week. We are planning to look after our seeds really well! DSC_0591.JPG
