Admissions

Every household in Edinburgh has a catchment area. The catchment area determines which schools you will be given a priority place. Going to a nearby school or nursery class or one which works with the school does not give you a priority place.

Find which schools are in your catchment area by using this interactive catchment map.

If you are applying for a place in P1 after 1 August, or in any other year groups:

Where possible, schools reserve places for children moving into the catchment area. However,  there is no guarantee of a place at your catchment school, so please check with us if you are considering moving into the area.

To complete the admission to St John’s, please download the request form, complete and return it to us.

You may also request a school outside your catchment area. This will only be granted if there is a place available.

If you are applying for a place in P1 at the start of August 2022

Admissions for children starting P1 for the first time are managed by the council’s Schools Transactions team.

If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2018 they are due to start primary school in August 2022. You must register your child for P1 using the online form. Registration opens on 1 November 2021.

You can apply to defer your child’s entry to P1 for a year, but we recommend you still register.

There is a lot of information, including a helpful FAQ page, on the council website, available here, and any updates about P1 enrolment at St John’s can be found here.
