Every household in Edinburgh has a catchment area. The catchment area determines which schools you will be given a priority place. Going to a nearby school or nursery class or one which works with the school does not give you a priority place.
Find which schools are in your catchment area by using this interactive catchment map.
If you are applying for a place in our Nursery
Starting the term after their third birthday, all eligible children can get a funded place in either a local authority nursery, partner nursery or with a childminder. Please contact the nursery to find out your options for how you can use your funded hours. All the information about enrolment can be found on the Edinburgh Council website.
If you would like to enrol your child in our nursery, please get in touch to arrange a way to provide us with this form, along with your child’s birth certificate and proof of address.
If you are applying for a place in P1 after 1 August, or in any other year groups:
Where possible, schools reserve places for children moving into the catchment area. However, there is no guarantee of a place at your catchment school, so please check with us if you are considering moving into the area.
To complete the admission to St John’s, please download the request form, complete and return it to us.
You may also request a school outside your catchment area. This will only be granted if there is a place available.
If you are applying for a place in P1 at the start of August 2024
If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2019 and 29 February 2020 they are due to start primary school in August 2024. You must register your child for P1 between 30 October and 17 November 2023. All information can be found on the Edinburgh Council website.
Admissions for children starting P1 for the first time are managed by the council’s Schools Transactions team.
You can apply to defer your child’s entry to P1 for a year, but we recommend you still register.
