Maths Week in P.1

This week in literacy P.1 have been learning about the sounds of ‘n’ and ‘p’. They have been looking at what begins with ‘n’ and ‘p’ and have been practising writing and forming them correctly in the cursive style on whiteboards. At home they can look for objects that begin with these sounds and play I-spy. They can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. They used the boards with magnetic letters to find the different sounds and made the words ‘nip’, ‘map’, ‘pin’, ‘pan’, ‘sip’ and ‘nap’.

In numeracy the children have been counting backwards from 10. They have been starting from different places and stopping at different places. At home they can count backwards from different starting points and can count objects around the house. P.1 practised writing their numerals on whiteboards and they can practise writing these at home.

This week for Maths Week the children listened to a story about creating a shape map and they made a shape map of their own showing where the hexagon, circle and semi-circle tables were in the classroom. Along with the rectangle smartboard and writing board. They used 2D shapes to create shape pictures and cityscapes inspired by the artist Paul Klee. They painted portraits in the style of Picasso but used numbers as part of their portraits. These ideas came from the Maths Week website and there were lots of activities for families to try at home. Family Activities – Maths Week Scotland

This week in RE P.1 talked about how different people help us in different ways, by using their God-given talents.  They then drew a picture of someone who helps them in their life.
