P2 Space Art

The children used pastels and chalks to draw a space scene based on their learning about the planets. Then the fun really began with splatter painting to create stars, meteors and cosmic dust. The looks on the children’s faces as they worked on their art shows how much they enjoyed this experience!

P.2 Home Learning February to Easter Holiday

Reading

Your child will bring a new reading book home each week. Please use the information in the book to support your child. Read as regularly as you can; short sessions are enough. Please ensure your child brings their reading folder into school each day as we use our books in class.

Encourage your child to practise reading and writing the words from their ‘tricky word wall’ at the back of their reading diary. Your child can colour each word when they can read and write it confidently. Once fully coloured, the next block of words will be provided. These words cannot be sounded out so it is important time to spend time learning them.

Phonics

New lists of sounds/words for this term will be sent home with the children. Focus on these at home to support learning. Your child will know the sounds they are learning each week. Ask your child to pinch and sound out each word then write it in their jotter. Choose 3 words (or more if your child is keen!) from the list to write a sentence with. Try to use describing words and connectives eg. and, but, so, because. Continue to practise cursive handwriting using the guide provided at the start of P2.

A weekly quiz to practise and revise sounds taught in school will be shared on the P.2 class learning page of the school website. The children use these in class so are familiar with the format.

Numeracy

Continue with the numeracy workbook sent home in January. Use counters to help your child with addition of numbers (any small items eg. pasta tubes, beads, buttons)

Complete the following pages:

Week beginning 24th February:  Pages 9 and 10

Week beginning 3rd March: Pages 11 and 12

Week beginning 10th March: Pages 13 and 14

Week beginning 17th March: Pages 15 and 16

Week beginning 24th March: Pages 17 and 18

Week beginning 31st March: Pages 19 and 20

Check your child’s answers and help with any incorrect pieces of work.

Sumdog

Each week, there will be a challenge set for the children which will relate to numeracy and maths concepts being worked on in class. Your child has their own login.

Each month, there will be a Sumdog competition for your child to take part in.

SPACE topic: the children have been asked to find out about a planet of their choice  using information texts or appropriate videos online. Use the information collected to make a poster, fact-file, piece of art work, a model, information booklet or any way of sharing learning that your child suggests. This can be brought into class and shared at any time between now and the Easter holiday. We have already had some eager learners share their research!

School website: https://stjohnsportobello.com

Please check the school website regularly for updates on learning in P.2.  Select the page ‘Class Learning at St John’s and then ‘Primary 2 Learning’.  We will send out information, upload photos and provide further ideas for home learning eg. websites/games.

It is important to remember that your child has been working hard in school all day so only 10 minutes of home learning is enough each evening. Many thanks for your support.

P2 Update

P2 have started their new learning focus on SPACE. This is creating a lot of excitement! Already this week, we have had some fascinating facts shared, read interesting information texts brought into school from home, taken part in imaginative play in our ‘mission control room’, produced colourful artwork, sung space songs and written about planets. There is so much to learn, do and make. We are all really looking forward to investigating this topic in more detail in the weeks to come and we will enjoy sharing our learning with you.

It was great to be outdoors for PE on the astro today. The children enjoyed their choice of games and showed excellent cooperation in their play.
