Non-Newtonian fluids

This week, Primary 6 delved into the fascinating world of non-Newtonian fluids! We got our hands messy making oobleck (a mix of cornflour and water) to truly explore how its properties change when we apply force.

By mixing cornflour and water, we observed firsthand how applying force transformed this seemingly simple substance, making it behave like a solid when punched or squeezed, yet flow like a liquid when left alone. It was amazing to see it act like both a liquid and a solid, and the children found it incredibly engaging to explore its unique properties!

We also discovered why non-Newtonian fluids are so important and widely used in areas like medicine, healthcare, everyday products, and scientific research!

A visit from the vet!

As part of P6’s STEM career topic, we have been learning about lots of jobs within STEM and which transferable skills we need for these jobs.

After researching a career of their choice the children presented their findings to the class!

We learnt lots about a wide range of careers from our peers including; being a forensic psychologist, biologist, chemist, civil engineer, and Veterinarian.

There were a few budding veterinarians in the class and so we asked a local vet to come and share their experience, skills and stories with the children.

Thank you Dundas Vet group Nurses for a wonderful and informative afternoon. Both P6 classes got the opportunity to ask lots of questions, see some real X-rays, and practice bandaging some stuffed pets!

A snapshot into P6A

Our whole school topic for the beginning of term 1 is expeditions. As a school we will be working on developing our teamwork skills ahead of a whole school expedition. We are excited to be embedding this unique learning experience through the curriculum.

We have been using our Wednesday STEM challenge afternoons to focus on different skills including teamwork, turn taking, problem solving, communication, fine motor skills and resilience!

Primary 6 worked together in pairs to ‘save Fred’ the hapless gummy worm who managed to capsize his lifeboat and lose his life jacket – all without hurting Fred or dropping him in the ‘lake’!

P6 worked super hard to assemble a catapult using lolly sticks and rubber bands – what a challenge! Well done P6 for demonstrating perseverance!

P6 worked in teams to build a contraption to keep an egg safe from breaking when dropped from a height.

Lots of smashed eggs in class today!

We also worked in teams with a strict time limit to create ‘the longest’ paper chain. What a success!

P6 have also created self portraits which includes words we might use to describe ourselves (our interests, character traits etc) as part of the detail. You’ll be able to admire them at Meet the Teacher.

We have been discussing the importance of a ‘growth mindset’. The children made super posters to showcase what they have learned.
