P.2 Update Friday 13th December

What a week! P.2 have had an extremely exciting time with Nativity performances, a Christmas ‘big play’ and a fun-filled party. We are very proud of the children for all they have achieved. Well done everyone.

Here is a link to some Christmas themed games to play at home:

Reading folders: please return these to school on Monday for collection.

On Tuesday 17th, P2 will go to the panto with the school. Children will need a water bottle and a snack as normal.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards.

P.2 Update 29.11.24

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of November and we are heading into the festive fun of December next week! Children will be bringing home a little booklet called ‘My Day by Day Advent 2024’ on Monday. Please complete this over the month ahead as a home learning task to help prepare for Christmas.

P.2 have used their Book Week Scotland texts in class this week and are now delighted to have their book bags home to share. Enjoy!

New reading books continue to be sent home weekly. Please support your child by reading together throughout the week. It really helps their progression.

In numeracy, we are still working on subtraction. Here is a link to a game you can play at home. Select the section ‘number bonds‘ and choose subtraction: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Nativity: we head into a big week of rehearsal next week before our first performance on Thursday for our P.7s (who will be at school camp when we have our whole school dress rehearsal the week beginning 9th December). The children are doing so well and it is so lovely watching and listening to them…’Little Donkey’ with sign language is definitely a tear jerker! Not long now till the main performances on the 11th.

Have a lovely weekend,

The P.2 Team

P.2 Update 22.11.24

P.2 have enjoyed lots of literacy learning throughout Book Week Scotland. We have shared our current favourite book, talking about why we like it so much, and redesigned the front cover. Using story maps, we explored the different parts of a story-the beginning, middle and ending. Our focus this week was on how to introduce a story. Producing correctly formed and neat handwriting continues to be worked on in class. Great to see how much effort the children are making. We were very excited to create our own individual mini-books in class on Thursday. What a range of subjects were selected! We had factual texts about marine biology, horses and Minecraft alongside fiction about unicorns, dragons and mermaids. We can’t wait to finish our books and publish them next week!

In phonics, we have been working on the following sounds:

Purple and blue groups: ur

Orange group: oo

Yellow group: b, f

Tricky word focus: you, one

Everyone of our P.2 children did St John’s proud when we visited Portobello Library this week. It was a chilly but beautiful day for a walk through our local area and we would like to thank all 10 of our parent helpers who accompanied us on our outing. Big thanks also to Ian and Paul at the library who entertained us with stories and informed us about the workings of a library. It was a great experience and we are looking forward to using our bookbags in school before taking them home next week.

Numeracy and Maths: We have been learning about subtraction by crossing out amounts and counting how many are left.

Here is a game to play at home. Select the subtraction sign on the train and adapt the level to suit your child’s knowledge of numbers eg. up to 20, up to 100.

P.2 have been investigating 3D shapes which will roll, stack or both and sorting them accordingly. We are more confident now in recognising, naming and writing the words for cone, cube, cuboid, sphere, pyramid and cylinder. Well done.

Nativity: Good progress has been made in preparing for our special P.1 and P.2 Nativity play. P.2 narrator parts were sent home in reading folders today so have a check please. Children decided for themselves if they wanted a speaking part or not. Everyone in P.2 will be singing as part of our choir and the songs are sounding amazing already!

Information about tickets is in this week’s newsletter.

Have a happy weekend.
