We would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our Scottish themed school ‘walk around’ and performance. The children were very excited about sharing their learning.

Here are our canny and bonnie displays of Scottish inspired writing and art. Outstanding effort P.3!

They say time flies when you’re having fun…well, that is definitely the case in P.3! We have had a busy start to February as we continue with our Scottish learning focus.

The children have been learning to sing three different Scottish songs. We will share recorded performances of these via a link next week. ‘The Jeely Piece’ song is proving extremely popular!

In art, the children have been expressively creating paintings, drawings and collage.

We have produced eye-catching ‘Tunnock’s Tea Cakes’ in a pop art style.

We have looked at some of the graphic work of Leith born artist Eduardo Paolozzi as a stimulus for our own Scottish landmark or landscape collage pieces.

The abstract and minimalist designs of Scottish artist William Turnbull were used as inspiration for our bold coloured paintings.

In writing, we have been using Scots language to create wee rhyming poems and we have tried to capture the beauty of our country in our Scotland acrostic poems. We have been learning to self and peer evaluate our writing then improve it by redrafting. Not easy but we are doing well.

The children have been given a copy of two Scottish poems to read and recite. A representative from each class will perform one of the poems as part of our school showcase. A selection of our Scottish work will be on display for parents to view during the ‘walk around’ school on Wednesday 11th February.  We hope you enjoy our art and writing.

In Maths, we are learning to tell the time. We want the children to be secure in knowing the hour (o’clock) and half past. The next step is to learn quarter past and quarter to the hour. We use both analogue and digital clocks to read the time. Please support your child with telling the time at home to help build their confidence. When able to, the children will then learn minutes past and to the hour.

In music, Miss Miller has been teaching the children about the electric guitar. In class, they have been listening to well known pieces of music played on electric guitar and as a surprise this week, the children were visited by senior pupils from Holyrood High School for a live performance 🎸🎸! Thank you to the boys for sharing their talent with us.

P.3 designed and made their own electric guitars…you can but dream!

It was a day of Scottish celebration in P3 today as we learned about the traditions of a Burns Supper then prepared and held our own class event.

We wrote a ‘Toast to the Lassies’ and the ‘Reply to The Laddies’ to include everyone in our year group. We listened to ‘The Address tae the Haggis’ in Scots language and tried to work out the meaning!

There were tatties to be peeled and mashed ready for our meal.

Tables were decorated and set with our Burns place mats and Highland Coo napkins. The Selkirk Grace was rehearsed ready to be recited before our ‘supper’.

Toasts were made and entertained us all!

Oor delicious haggis, neeps and tatties were devoured…a lot of hungry bairns in P.3 who raved about the ‘Great Chieftain O’ the Puddin Race’!

We were so proud of the children for trying/enjoying the food and showing excellent table manners throughout our Burns Supper.

Next it was on to the music and the dancing with some Scottish favourites like ‘The Three Craws’ to sing along to.

A wee treat of shortbread, Abernethy biscuits and oatcakes rounded off our celebration. Well done P.3 – you did brilliantly today.

A special thank you to Mrs Redman’s Mum who was a magnificent help to us today.
