Some of the girls in P3a entered an Easter Bonnet competition being run by Hobbycraft at Kinnaird Park. Local schools were invited to enter.
The children decorated a bonnet provided by Hobbycraft and won 3rd Prize for their design.

St John’s celebrated Fairtrade fortnight in style with a hugely successful Big Breakfast on Friday 18th March. After weeks of planning by pupils and staff from P2, 3 and 4 the big day finally came and with the help of dedicated parent helpers, teachers and school support staff the event was a fantastic celebration of all things Fairtrade. The Co-Operative store supported the school with vouchers with which we bought ingredients for baking. Relish Deli, based on Constitution Street, Leith, once again very kindly supported us by donating hamper boxes and items for the raffle, paper cups, lids and napkins.
P2 prepared fresh fruit kebabs and did a great job offering these to visitors in the hall. P3 manned the crossiant stall and collected donations as visitors entered and left the hall. P4 pupils, supported by P7, ran the raffle stall and also handed out Fairtrade fresh orange juice. Children in P2 baked banana muffins which were delicious and P3 pupils made flapjacks in class. Staff filled kettles and poured coffees and teas for our guests and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help the event run smoothly.
P4 children, who are very busy preparing their Easter play for Thursday 24th March, sang one of their songs for the gathered guests and did a great job. P4 pupils had also written letters to the Co-Operative asking for financial support to purchase ingredients for baking. Near the end of the morning we played a film put together by Miss Purnell which highlighted the importance of Fairtrade and P3 sang a catchy Fairtrade song for the audience.
Finally we drew the raffle prizes just before the bell and the children and parents made their way out of the hall at the end of another busy week in school.
As a school we appreciate the support of all our parents, grandparents, family and friends who came to support our First level children in this important event. We must also acknowledge the time and effort given to make this possible by the St John’s First level staff team.
The children of P2, 3 and 4 did Fairtrade proud!
P3 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the National Museum of Scotland as part of the Ancient Egypt topic on Thursday.
The day included an interactie, fun and engaging workshop led by the learning team at the museum, a quick bite to eat in the group dining area and a tour of the museum led by staff and parents to solve the Egyptian trial challenges.
The children impressed the museum staff with their knowledge of Ancient Egypt and the children enjoyed the opportunity to handle genuine artefacts dating back between 2000 and 4000 years.
Children learned about the use of charms, the process of mummification and the journey people took towards reaching the Afterlife.
P3 had a great time!
P3 walked over a mile round the Figgate pond, up past one side of the Figgate burn and back down the other to raise money for SCIAF on a damp and dreich Wednesday morning as part of our Lenten fundraising efforts.
On the way they stopped off to look at the birds in the pond and noticed an unusual duck swimming by itself. After some detective work they identified it as a Mandarin duck, an unusual sight in Portobello since they originated in China!
Well done P3 for walking for SCIAF and thank you to everyone who sponsored the children.
Well done to P3 pupils who celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday 7th March in St John’s parish church.
The children have prepared thoroughly over 14 weeks leading up to Monday’s service and really shone in the way they celebrated the sacrament.
Thank you to all the families who came to support the children and to the parish team who put in so much work to make the preparation a success. A special thank you to Fr Jock Dalrymple and Fr Jimmy Smith who heard the first reconciliations and Fr Dennis Connor and Fr John Robinson who supported adults visit the sacrament too.
Well done boys and girls!
