Primary 3 Update 5.9.25

We have had a positive and productive start to the new school year in P.3. The children have settled in well to their new learning environment and routines. The first few weeks have been busy and enjoyable!

It was lovely to see and talk to so many parents at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Wednesday.  Thank you for attending. Our presentation is available to view below.

Home Learning:

Every Monday, a home learning plan will be shared here on our P3 page of the school website. This will include specific tasks for literacy, numeracy and other learning. We will provide a mix of written, active and digital technology based tasks.

Your child was given a home learning folder this week with materials to support and extend the tasks outlined on the weekly plan. This included:

Literacy jotter for spelling and writing

Capital letters booklet

Handwriting booklet

Reading activity grid

Numeracy workbook

QR codes for maths & numeracy apps

Please follow the weekly plan to support your child in completing their home learning. This will reinforce what they have been doing in class and keep you informed about their learning. Thank you.

Reading Folder:

Your child now has their reading book home. Pages to be read each week will be recorded in their reading diary.

Please encourage your child to read other books for enjoyment and interest.

The reading activity grid in the home learning folder has ideas for tasks to extend your child’s thinking about texts they have read.

Sharing our Learning:

Literacy:

In phonics, we have been working on words with split digraphs a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e, for example, cube, hope, kite, pine. The children have been building words using sound cubes, playing spelling hopscotch outdoors and writing sentences.  In writing, the children created a fact-file about the Ancient Egyptians using information gathered from a video they viewed.

Numeracy and Maths:

Focus on place value using partitioning.

The children used concrete materials to partition 2 digit numbers:

34 = 30 and 4, 20 and 14, 10 and 24.

They used the number pieces website to practise this concept.

In maths, we continue our focus on shape. We have been finding out about the number of sides each shape has and investigating different ways to make a pentagon, hexagon, heptagon and octagon. We have been learning to write these shape names.

Ancient Egyptians Study:

This week, we started our exciting new topic by exploring where Egypt is in the world, how long ago people lived there and what kind of information we want to find out about life there in the past.

We studied some Egyptian hieroglyphics and wrote our names using these.

We made our own Egyptian alphabet dictionaries to help us learn some of the new vocabulary connected to our topic work.

Health and Wellbeing:

We have had some high energy PE lessons with Mr Devine, playing games like bench dodge ball. Lots of fun and great exercise while working as part of a team.

We have created our P3 class charters and learned about our new school values. We have been talking and thinking about our feelings at the beginning of a new school year and wrote descriptive emotions poems.

RE:

We have been learning about The Ten Commandments and making good choices. We used drama to think about our choices and consequences.

Art:

The work of artist Henri Matisse has been a stimulus for our eye-catching, colourful shape collage creations.

Music:

P3 have started weekly music lessons with Miss Miller. We look forward to sharing some of their activities in the coming weeks.

French:

Our focus has been numbers to 20 through songs and a long running game of Bingo!

Learner Directed Activities:

P3 voted to call their new shared space the ‘Rainbow Zone’. Here, we have seen a range of experiences selected by the children: lego construction, reading books, drawing, chess games, puzzles, imaginative play. Both classes can work together in this zone and have been showing great independence and responsibility.

We have been so impressed with our wonderful P3 learners’ effort and attitude.  We look forward to a great year ahead.

Many thanks for your support.

Primary 3 Home Learning

14 November 2022

This week is book week and we have some special activities planned!

Monday – We are going to the Library for a special book bags gifting event. We will be exploring the bags in school and bringing them home later in the week.

Wednesday – Bring a book to lunch. Everyone in St John’s will be bringing a book along to read at lunch. It can be a book from home or from the class library.

Thursday – P3 will have a shared reading session with P5.

There will be an extra focus on reading and story telling this week and we are all excited about our Read Write Count bags. If your child would like to share what they are reading at home we would love to see and hear about their favourite books.

Literacy

Here are our tricky words this week. Practice at home if you can.

Mountain/Tree/Flower: her, would, make, like, him

Moon/Sun: live, me, back, give, most

Ocean: Spelling rule:  adding the suffix y (2)

Words: simply, shiny, spiky, cheesy, greasy

Numeracy

In numeracy this week, we are using our number bonds to 10 to help us build strategies to add across 10 (e.g. 16 + 8). At home you could practice your number bonds to 10 by playing the game from last week game or here is an explanation of a game some children have played in class to practice our bonds (this video was made during lockdown for a different class!) video
