Here is a sample overview of our learning in P3:
Literacy:
In phonics, we continue to revise previously taught sounds and use our knowledge to build words.
We have also been working on the sounds: ‘igh’/’y’ and ‘oa’/’ow’. We have been writing words with these sounds.
We are enjoying playing active phonics games outdoors such as spelling hopscotch and word hunts. We have been using the words we find to write an interesting sentence. Spelling games on our iPad and word bingo have been good fun.
We have got fully into the swing of our P3 reading groups in class and kindly ask that you support your child’s reading at home to enhance their learning in this area.
Our focus in writing has been The Nile River as part of our Egyptian study. We have learned alot of information about the different reasons the Nile was, and still is, important to the people and places around it. We have watched factual films, read texts and created word banks.
We have written fact-files and poems about the Nile River.
Numeracy and Maths:
We continue to learn about place value with a focus on 1s and 10s on the number line to 100. We enjoyed drawing chalk number lines outdoors and using them to play games like throw the bean bag and estimate the number.
We have been using the more than and less than symbols to compare numbers and amounts. In outdoor maths, we collected natural objects and compared using < and >. We have been writing expanded numbers to 100.
In Maths, our focus has been on accurately drawing and describing features of 2D shapes such as vertices. We have been learning new shapes such as trapezium. We used an app called Geoboard to create 2D shapes such as an octagon.
Art:
It was very exciting to get to think and talk about…CHRISTMAS (in September!) as we designed our cards ready for sending away to be printed for our annual school fundraiser.
We worked together to create a large collage of the Nile River for our classroom wall display. We used a variety of papers and colours to build texture.
Technology:
We learned about the Ancient Egyptian people designing and making a Shaduf to collect water from the Nile. We built our own Shaduf models using straws and white tac.
Music:
We have been singing a song called ‘Living, Living River Nile’. We used percussion instruments to play the rhythm and create a sound map for the flow of the river.
Egyptian Topic:
As well as our learning about the Nile River, we have enjoyed completing Hieroglyphic code breakers and creating secret messages for others to decode.
RE:
The wonder and beauty of God’s creation was our focus as we made our own nature mobiles to hang in our classrooms. We listened to and sung the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful”.
The Bible story of Jesus welcoming the little children to sit, listen and talk with him was explored. We discussed how Jesus lived and the example he set us for love, kindness, and forgiveness. We thought about how we can try to be more like Jesus in our every day lives.
We saw a brilliant example of this during P3A’s music lesson with Miss Miller when she had next to no speaking voice. Two helpers came to her aid and supported her throughout by giving instructions to the class. Well done boys!
French:
We enjoy songs to help us learn new vocabulary. We have been learning daily greetings and family names. We do like a game of French Bingo too!
Weekly Assembly:
We join together in the hall each week on a Wednesday to celebrate our successes. We would love to hear about the children’s achievements outwith school to include at our assemblies. You can email the school admin at Admin@st-johns.edin.sch.uk to share personal successes and achievements.
HWB:
We continue to work on the social skills of listening and talking, friendships and managing conflict in an appropriate manner within our classes. We encourage the power of discussion and thinking before we act.
