World Book Day

This week in literacy P.1 have learned the sounds of ‘igh’ and ‘ow’. They made words such as ‘high’, ‘sigh’, ‘light’, ‘sight’,‘night’, ‘might’ ‘low’, ‘mow’, ‘sow’, ‘blow’, ‘show’, ‘grow’ and ‘snow’ with magnetic boards. In their jotter, they wrote some of these words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make ‘igh’ and ‘ow’ words and write them too. The children practised reading the tricky words ‘saw’ and ‘no’.  At home they can practise reading and writing these tricky words.

In numeracy the children were looking at different spot patterns and dice pattern cards for quick visual counting. They made spot patterns of their own with paint, playdough, hoops and pencils. At home they can practise counting dice and domino spot patterns. They have been learning to identify and order coins and have been using the till and coins in the class Fairtrade shop. They can practise putting coins into order from least amount to the most.

This week in RE P.1 were listening to the Bible story of ‘Jesus in the Desert’. They learned that he was in the desert for 40 days to prepare for starting his teachings. They learned that he prayed and fasted as part of his preparation and that Catholics do the same during Lent for 40 days to prepare for Easter.

This week many of the children dressed up as a book character for World Book Day. They have listened to a different story each day in preparation for World Book Day. Some of the children shared the books they brought in to match their character.

P.1 Playground Games

This week in literacy P.1 have started the set 2 sounds from RWInc.  They learned the sounds of ‘ay’ and ‘ee’. They made words such as ‘day’, ‘way’, ‘say’, ‘pay’, ‘lay’, ‘see’, ‘seen’,‘keep’, ‘feel’, ‘feet’ and ‘sheep’ with magnetic boards. In their jotter, they wrote some of these words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make ‘ay’ and’ee’ words and write them too. The children practised reading the tricky words ‘was’ and ‘want’.  At home they can practise reading and writing these tricky words.

In numeracy the children were practising counting forwards and backwards from different starting points. They practised what comes ‘after’ and ‘before’ a specific number. They were looking at different spot patterns and dice pattern cards for quick visual counting. They made spot patterns of their own with paint, playdough and pencils. At home they can practise counting dice and domino spot patterns. They can say what is ‘before’ and ‘after’ with different numbers to 20. They can practise adding 2 amounts together.

This week in RE P.1 were learning about Lent. They learned that it is a time to prepare for Easter by trying to do extra things to help others. They talked about how they could help at home by tidying, doing the dishes and helping around the house. They talked about how they can help at school by showing kindness, sharing and helping others. They chose one thing that they would do during Lent and wrote it on card with a picture to hang on the P.1 Lenten tree.

This week some of the P.7 buddies came to teach P.1 some playground games. They played a circle game and a listening game where the children had to listen out for instructions such as ‘move in slow motion’,‘sit down’ or ‘freeze’. The P.7’s explained and demonstrated the games well and all the P.1 children had fun learning new games.

P.1 Learning

This week in literacy P.1 have been revising all the set 1 sounds. They made cvc/ccvc words with magnetic boards and in their jotter, they wrote some of these words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make cvc and ccvc words and write them too. The children practised reading the tricky words ‘his’ and ‘put’.  At home they can practise reading and writing these tricky words.

In numeracy the children were practising counting backwards from different starting points.  In their addition workbooks they were adding 1 more and 2 more. They were doing an addition group game to develop their addition skills. They were looking at different spot patterns and dice pattern cards for quick visual counting. At home they can practise counting dice and domino spot patterns. They can practise adding 2 amounts together. In maths P.1 have been learning about money. They have been using the till and the purses in the class and have been ordering coins from least amount to most in a smart board game. At home they can order coins and make different amounts.

This week in RE P.1 listened to the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’. They talked about what makes a good neighbour and friend. They wrote about helping others and drew a picture showing how they can help others at school and be a good friend.

Lunar New Year in P.1

This week in literacy P.1 have been learning the sound of ‘nk’ and revising all the sounds covered so far. They made words such as ‘sink’, ‘bank’, ‘tank’, ‘bunk’, ‘thank’, ‘chunk’, ‘pink’,‘wink’, ‘junk’, and ‘rink’.  They made ‘nk’ words with magnetic letters and practised writing ‘nk’ on the whiteboards. In their jotter they wrote some ‘nk’ words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make cvc and cvcc words and write them too. The children practised reading the tricky words ‘me’ and ‘is’.  At home they can practise reading and writing these tricky words.

In numeracy the children were practising counting backwards from different starting points. They were also counting two rows of counters, where they had to continue counting on to find how many altogether. They practised what comes ‘after’ and ‘before’ a specific number. They worked on counting ‘how many altogether’ in their addition workbooks. At home they can practise counting items forwards and backwards and write different amounts. They can say what is ‘before’ and ‘after’ with different numbers to 20. They can add 2 amounts together.

This week P.1 were learning about Lunar New Year. They enjoyed tasting noodles and lychees and sang some Lunar New Year songs. They had the opportunity to write Chinese characters and make Chinese New Year cards with lucky red envelopes. They watched some dragon dances and worked together in the gym hall to create some dragon dances of their own.

This week in literacy P.1 have been learning the sounds of ‘th’ and ‘ng’. They made ccvc/cvcc words such as ‘that’, ‘this’,‘then’, ‘them’, ‘thin’, ‘thick’, ‘thud’, ‘bath’, ‘moth’, ‘bang’,‘ring’ ‘thing’, ‘lung’, ‘long’,’rang’ and ‘king’.  They made ‘th‘ and ng’ words with the magnetic letters and practised writing ‘th’ and ‘ng’ on the whiteboards. In their jotter they wrote some ‘th’ words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make cvc and ccvc/cvcc words and write them too. The children practised reading the tricky words ‘to’ and ‘he’.  At home they can practise reading and writing these tricky words.

In numeracy the children were practising their oral counting forwards and backwards. They were also counting two rows of counters, where they had to continue counting on to find how many altogether. They practised what comes ‘after’ and ‘before’a specific number. At home they can practise counting items forwards and backwards and write different amounts. They can say what is ‘before’ and ‘after’ with different numbers to 20.

In RE P.1 listened to the Creation story. They chose their favourite plant or animal to paint which were displayed to create a Creation story wall frieze.
