Butterflies in P.1

This week in literacy P.1 have been revising the sounds of ‘ng’ and ‘nk’. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make words and write them too. They can practise writing simple sentences with some of their words.  P.1 also practised reading all the tricky words. They used the magnetic boards to make words with the digraphs of ‘ng’, and ‘nk’.  They wrote a dictation sentence in their jotters. At home they can practise reading and writing tricky words and using them in a sentence.

In numeracy the children copied number patterns with sound and movement. They had to watch and count how many hand chops were made and listen to sounds of a bell and count the chime patterns. They worked on their addition using fingers and ‘counting on’ mental strategy to work out the answers. When practising the mental strategy they counted out 5, 6 or 7 counters and hid them under paper. They put extra counters at the side of the paper They counted on the extra counters to add the 2 amounts together. They then did a measure game on the smartboard when they finished their workbook page.

The children were very excited that the cocoons in the class had opened and we have five butterflies which we released into Treverlan Park as part of our topic work on Living Things. Some children were inspired to draw pictures of the butterflies.

P.1 Learning

This week in literacy P.1 have been revising the set 2 sounds of ‘ay’, ‘ee’, ‘igh’, ‘ow’, ‘oo’, ‘or’, ‘ou’ and ‘oy’. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make words and write them too. They can practise writing simple sentences with some of their words.  P.1 also practised reading all the tricky words and learned new tricky words ‘we’ and ‘she’. They wrote some of the tricky words and a sentence on whiteboards. They used the magnetic boards to make words with the set 2 digraphs of ‘sh’, ‘ch’and ‘th’. They enjoyed using word wheels to make, read and write words. They wrote a dictation sentence in their jotters. At home they can practise reading and writing their new tricky words.

In numeracy the children counted forwards and back and revised their doubles addition sums. They have been learning about measure. They have been using measuring tapes and non-standard units of measure such as cubes. They have used volume containers in the water and sand areas.

This week in RE P.1 were listening to the story of The Resurrection and thought about how Jesus’ friends must have felt when they saw him again. They drew a picture of Jesus with the apostles and discussed and wrote what vocabulary would express the feelings of the apostles.

Learning in P.1

P.1 settled back into their learning after their two week break. P.1 also practised reading all the set 1 tricky words and learned new tricky words ‘go’ and ‘be’. They wrote some of the tricky words and a sentence on white boards. They played a blending matching game together in a small group. At home they can practise reading and writing their new tricky words.

In numeracy the children were making doubles with their fingers, and learning their double addition sums from 1-5. They applied their double addition skills to help them add sums in their workbook. They have been learning to identify and order coins and have been using the till and coins in the class Fairtrade shop. At home they can make different amounts up to 10p and beyond.

This week in RE P.1 were learning about Thomas the apostle. They listened to the Bible story of Thomas and how he had doubted in Jesus until he saw him for himself. They drew a picture of Thomas with Jesus and wrote a sentence in their RE jotters.

P.1 Learning

This week in literacy P.1 have learned the sounds of ‘aw’ and ‘or’. They made words such as ‘saw’, ‘paw’, ‘jaw’, ‘law’,‘yawn’, ‘lawn’ ‘shawl’, ‘for’, ‘born’, ‘horn’, ‘fork’, ‘cord’ and ‘torch’ with magnetic boards. In their jotter, they wrote some of these words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make ‘aw’ and ‘or’ words and write them too.  They can practise writing simple sentences with some of their words. P.1 also practised reading all the tricky words.  At home they can practise reading and writing set 1 tricky words.

In numeracy the children were making amounts with their fingers, but they had to try and do this at the side of their head without looking at their fingers to see if they could make amounts up to 5 in different ways. They used their knowledge of making amounts to complete the addition sums in their addition workbook. They used some of the sum cards to write sums and add them on whiteboards.        They have been learning to identify and order coins and have been using the till and coins in the class Fairtrade shop. They used a ‘Topmarks’ money game on the smartboard to order coins and to count different amounts. At home they can make different amounts up to 10p and beyond.

This week in RE P.1 were learning about Holy Week, the last week in Lent. They listened to the story of ‘The Last Supper’ and drew a picture of Jesus holding up the bread and saying ‘This is my body’ to the apostles.

Learning in P.1

This week in literacy P.1 have learned the sounds of ‘oo’ and ‘ar’. They made words such as ‘moon’, ‘boom’, ‘soon’, ‘book’,‘cook’, ‘foot’ ‘roof’, ‘wood’, ‘car’, ‘bar’, ‘far’, ‘tar’ and ‘jar’ with magnetic boards. In their jotter, they wrote some of these words and a short sentence. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make ‘oo’ and ‘ar’ words and write them too. In numeracy the children were making amounts with their fingers. They looked at how to make amounts up to 5 in different ways. They were learning that swapping amounts around leads to the same answer, eg. 2+3=5, 3+2=5. They practised some of these addition sums in their addition workbook. They have been learning to identify and order coins and have been using the till and coins in the class Fairtrade shop and using ‘Topmarks’ website to order coins on the smart board. At home they can practise putting coins into order from least amount to the most.

This week in RE P.1 were learning that Sunday is a special day for Catholics. It is when they can go to Mass and pray, sing hymns and listen to stories from the Bible.  They wrote about Sunday being special and drew a picture of a Church.
