This week in literacy P.1 have been revising the sounds of ‘ng’ and ‘nk’. At home they can practise writing the sounds with pencils and felt pens. At home the children can use their sounds to make words and write them too. They can practise writing simple sentences with some of their words. P.1 also practised reading all the tricky words. They used the magnetic boards to make words with the digraphs of ‘ng’, and ‘nk’. They wrote a dictation sentence in their jotters. At home they can practise reading and writing tricky words and using them in a sentence.
In numeracy the children copied number patterns with sound and movement. They had to watch and count how many hand chops were made and listen to sounds of a bell and count the chime patterns. They worked on their addition using fingers and ‘counting on’ mental strategy to work out the answers. When practising the mental strategy they counted out 5, 6 or 7 counters and hid them under paper. They put extra counters at the side of the paper They counted on the extra counters to add the 2 amounts together. They then did a measure game on the smartboard when they finished their workbook page.
The children were very excited that the cocoons in the class had opened and we have five butterflies which we released into Treverlan Park as part of our topic work on Living Things. Some children were inspired to draw pictures of the butterflies.
