Primary 2 Home Learning – Summer Term 2025

Reading

Your child will bring a new reading book home each week. Please use the information in the book to support your child. Read together as regularly as you can; short but frequent sessions are best. Tasks will be recorded in your child’s reading diary. Please ensure your child brings their reading folder into school each day as we use our books in class.

Phonics and Writing

New lists of sounds/words for this term are enclosed in the folder your child brought home today. Your child will know which sounds they are learning each week. Focus on these at home to support literacy learning. Ask your child to ‘pinch and sound out’ each word in the list then write it in their jotter. Choose 3 words (or more if your child is keen!) from the list to write a sentence with. Encourage your child to think of their own ideas and write independently. Remember a capital letter to start and a full stop to end. Try to use a variety of describing words and connectives: and, but, so, because. Vary sentence starters. Read sentences at the end to check they make sense – add in missed words. Continue to work on neat handwriting.

A weekly quiz to practise and revise sounds taught in school will be shared on the P.2 class learning page of the school website. The children use these in class so are familiar with the format.

Numeracy and Maths

Money

Work with real coins. Name each coin – 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2. Use coins to make amounts. Make the same amount using different coin combinations, for example, make 15p in 3 different ways. Write amounts using the p sign for pence and £ sign if your child is able to work with pounds.  Start with small amounts and work up according to your child’s level of understanding. Set up a toy or food shop for play-based learning about money.

Money Workbook (enclosed in home learning folder): complete 2 pages each week

Check your child’s answers and help with any incorrect pieces of work.

Time:

Tell the time with your child using both digital and analogue clocks. Focus on using o’clock and half past the hour. If your child is confident with this, move on to quarter past and quarter to the hour. Some children grasp telling the time quickly and can move on to using minutes past/to the hour. For others, telling the time can be tricky and it is ok to keep practising the basics. We will be working on time in class in the weeks ahead. 

Sumdog

Each week, there will be a challenge set for the children which will relate to numeracy and maths concepts being worked on in class. Completing this challenge at home will reinforce learning in school.  Your child has their own login.

Each month, there will be a Sumdog competition for your child to take part in. 

Topic: This term, we will be learning about ‘Our Senses and Living Things’. 

Choose any ‘living thing’ – human, bird, fish, insect, mammal, reptile, plant etc. Find out about your chosen ‘living thing’ by reading, watching a video and looking at images to gather information.

Make a poster or fact-file to bring into class and share. Include drawing and writing about your chosen ‘living thing’. Include information on what they eat/drink, how they move, where they live, life cycle/growth and change, physical features.

An A3 sheet of paper is enclosed in home learning folder. Please bring completed work to school by Friday 30th May.

The children will share their learning in class.

Please check the school website regularly for updates on learning in P.2.  Select the page ‘Class Learning at St John’s’ and then ‘Primary 2 Learning’.  We will send out information, upload photos and provide further ideas for home learning eg. websites, games and activities.

It is important to remember that your child has been working hard in school all day so only 10/15 minutes of home learning each evening is enough.
