Problem Solving with Primary 6

Today, pupils in P6 were exploring problems using a lot of their learned strategies with decimals.  One problem in particular too a lot of thinking in terms of what was needed to be done.  The scenario was:

A shopkeeper has 30 magazines.  One the first day, he sells 8 for a price of £12.80.

On the second day, he sells 10 for £13.90.

On the third day, he sells the rest and gets £21.60.

On which day were the magazines the most expensive?  How much did the magazines cost when they were the least expensive?

Through discovery, pupils identified the key facts:  the total, the numbers sold for days 1 and 2 (and therefore for day 3), the total amounts in money for days 1, 2 and 3.  That was the easy part.  The hard part was what to do with all of the information.

I have attached a picture below of one pupil’s ideas as to what could be done to solve the problem.image (3)This pupil chose to divide and compare, as you can see.  The work showed a lot of thinking, comprehension and collaboration.  Very well done!!!

Tim Peake’s launch,

The big day finally arrived for Tim Peake’s launch to the International Space Station. We came in from a busy break excited for what we were about to see.  We eagerly waited for the blast off, keeping our fingers crossed the smart board connection was going to work. We were so fortunate that the BBC broadcast kept its signal and we were able to see with our own eyes the launch. It was phenomenal!!

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF!!! Finally the Soyuz rocket launched into space. We all gave a great big cheer!! It was an amazing feeling to watch.  Loads of fire came out of the boosters and it went up into space.   Then gradually pieces of the soyuz separated from the boosters, then we saw a bit of what was going on inside the spacecraft, and we saw Tim Peake  controlling the soyuz rocket.

Afterwards we went to our seats and wrote a couple of sentences about how we felt during launch. Then we drew the badge that Tim Peake will be wearing in space. After that we wrote about what 10 things Tim Peake is planning to do in space – its all very interesting!

P6 really enjoyed watching the launch!!!!!!!

7.12.15 – Space blog

On 23rd November we had a visit from the Royal Observatory.

The first thing we did was go into a big dome called the star lab, we all went in we sat down and watched a PowerPoint about ISS (International Space Station) after that the lights dimmed and stars started to appear and Russell told us a story to go with the group of stars he pointed out with his laser pen.

After that we went up to our classroom and Russell taught us how to build paper rockets in group then we went outside to launch them with a tube, a bottle and our rockets – some of them went flying through the air at great speed!

After launching our rockets we went to the gym hall to do some space training there was four stations Steady hand test, Marshmallow Syringe, Agility and tricky jigsaw. Our favourite station was the tricky jigsaw because we had to put on astronaut gloves and try to solve the jigsaw, it was very tricky.

Overall it was a very fun day – we learned lots of new facts about Space and the challenges Tim Peak will be facing very soon.
