Library Visit

Primary 2B had a fun filled trip to Portobello library today! Ian the librarian read us stories that had us laughing out loud and we love our book bags!

P6’s Criminality Conversation

Today, P6 had a visit from the community police officers, Gareth and Amanda. They told us about all the different roles within the police, such as helicopter police, firearms officers, traffic, CID and dog handlers.

Then, we discussed the age of criminality, which we found out was 8. We were surprised that it was this low! It means that if we did a crime like vandalism, assault (verbal and physical), cyberbullying or theft, we could get charged and be given a criminal record.

Having a criminal record can affect your opportunities later in life, particularly if you want to do certain jobs like police officer or teacher. Primary 6 found this discussion really interesting, and are more aware of the need to be careful with our words and actions.

P2 Engineers

P2 were engineers for the day and designed and constructed their own broomstick with room for all the characters from their Halloween class book ‘Room on a Broom’.

“Mine has five seats and gates, so nobody falls off.”- Mette

“My broomstick has a led blower to make it a little bit quicker and an engine and two wings at both of the sides and five seats”- David

“My broomstick has two floors and it has the fastest engine in the world.” -Amir

“My broomstick has a flag on it and it has a control room to fly it. And a storage box for food if they fly for a long time and get hungry.”- Elliot

“Mine is super thick and can never break.”- Dylan

999! Emergency Services Visit P6!

Today we had an exciting surprise waiting for us when we got to school!

We had a real sense of community feeling during our Early Intervention. There were firefighters and police officers waiting for along with their vehicles and equipment.

First of all, each class got to look at the firefighters’ appliance, looked at the equipment and got to sit in the seats in the back. Some people even got to try on the uniform! We think the teachers enjoyed wearing the fire helmets more than we did!

We learnt about the role of a firefighter, and that the tank in the appliance has 1800l of water, the equivalent of 3600 water bottles! They had two inflatable mats that could support over 30 tonnes, and heavy equipment that helped them to open doors.

Next, we saw the police officers. They let us try their uniform and batons, and some people got handcuffed! They also showed us old fashioned uniforms too. Some people got to go in the front of the van and beep the horn while the sirens were on, everyone else enjoyed dancing to the sound of the sirens. Unfortunately we couldn’t go into the back of their police van because the hinge got stuck.

It was a really fun morning, we hope they come back to show us more!

P6 Learning Log – Week Beginning 23.09.19

Primary 6 have been researching information about their Rugby World Cup team’s country and created a fact file. They learned about the food, currency, landmarks and other key information. In P.E. teams from each pool played against each other as part of their pre-season training.

As this week is snapshot journal week, the children have been taking care to produce their best work. In maths, they continued their learning of decimals and can now confidently add and subtract numbers with two decimal places. They even managed to apply their learning to solve complicated word problems!

In writing, the children continued the next part of a story in the style of the author focusing on VCOP. We were so impressed with the descriptive language they were able to include!

As part of our learning about the solar system, the children worked in pairs to research a planet and display their learning on a poster or leaflet. They also created beautiful and colourful pieces of art based on the aurora borealis using chalk and oil pastels.

Thursday saw the return of St. John’s Got Talent! Well done to everyone who auditioned and to Milly and Sophie, Catriona and Sophia, Beniamin and Leo who got through to the finals, you did yourselves and primary 6 proud! We are looking forward to finding out the results at assembly next Friday!
